What Is Image Format Conversion?

Image format conversion is the process of changing an image file from one encoding format to another — for example, converting a PNG screenshot to a JPEG for email, or a JPEG photo to WebP for faster web loading. Different formats offer different trade-offs between file size, quality, transparency support, and browser compatibility.

Our converter works entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. When you select an image, it's decoded locally, drawn onto an invisible canvas, and then re-encoded in your chosen format. Your images never leave your device — there are no server uploads, no cloud processing, and no risk of your files being stored or intercepted.

This makes our tool ideal for sensitive documents, personal photos, or any situation where privacy matters. The conversion happens instantly, even for large images, because everything runs on your own hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really free?

Yes, completely free with no limits. There are no watermarks, no sign-ups, and no hidden fees. Our tool runs in your browser and is supported by non-intrusive advertising.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device. We cannot see, access, or store any images you convert.

Will converting formats reduce image quality?

It depends on the format. Converting to PNG is lossless — no quality loss. Converting to JPEG or WebP uses lossy compression, but you can control quality with our slider. At 90%+ quality, the difference is virtually imperceptible.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPEG?

JPEG doesn't support transparency. When you convert a PNG with transparent areas to JPEG, the transparent areas are automatically filled with white. If you need to preserve transparency, use PNG or WebP.
